Gunter Stephan studied Mathematics, Physics and Economics at the Universities of Heidelberg (Germany) and Stanford (USA). He graduated with a masterís degree in Mathematics and received a Ph.D. in Economics from the Alfred-Weber-Institute of the University of Heidelberg. Since 1988 Gunter Stephan is full professor of Applied Microeconomics at the Department of Economics at the University of Bern.

Gunter Stephan was member of several scientific advisory committees such as the German Climate Research Program (DEKLIM) and the German Council of Science and Humanities (Deutscher Wissenschaftsrat).He was Vice-Rector (Provost) of the University of Bern, deputy director of the NCCR Climate and is member of the board of directors of the Oeschger Center of Climate Research (OCCR) at the University of Bern.

Gunter Stephan published more than 10 books and 60 papers in internationally reviewed journals. His research includes general equilibrium theory, capital theory as well as environmental and resource economics. Presently, he focuses his research and teaching activities on climate economics in general and on integrated assessment analysis of climate change as well as the interaction between climate change policies and international trade in particular.
